Dance as Social Protest, by Lindsey Golden

“By its very nature the creative imagination lies beyond the reach of its vilest oppressor—whether it be person or system and no matter how great the advantage of armaments, instruments of torture, or devices that affect psychological disorientation (Nettleford, 15).” Dance as a way to express a rejection of societal injustice or inhibition has been an important venue for the creative imagination throughout the 20th and 21st century. Universally, dance has been wielded to uncover the true beliefs of the individual spirit.

Reflections and Looking Ahead

The Golden Dance Experiment is now officially in its second season! We have accomplished so many wonderful things during our first year and are planning to continue to grow in new directions for 2013-2014. In our first season we performed for so many wonderful events and in so many diverse venues: SOVA in Washington DC, Charm City Movement Arts street performances and in-studio showcases, the Maryland Dance Alliance at Essex Community College CCBC Theater, the Creative Alliance's Children's Day at Patterson Park, the Baltimore Theater Project premiere concert of the Golden Dance Experiment, the Ottobar CCMA Circus Spectacular, and Cosmic Campout 2013 music festival. We were also featured in the DC art's magazine Bourgeon, with a full-page article on the origin of the company, as well as the Baltimore Sun with pictures from Lindsey Golden's modern dance master class at the first anual meeting of the Maryland Dance Alliance 2013. The company is having an audition July 27th 2013 and is planning to expand. Expect to see some exciting genres of dance fusion for our second season with acrobatics, dance combat fighting, classical Indian, African dance, contemporary and classical ballet, break dance and hip-hop, contemporary jazz, and contact improvisation with extensive collaboration with musicians, DJs and circus performers. Thank you to all who have come out to support the Golden Dance Experiment and please continue to check out our upcoming events.

December 2012 Prose of the Month

What is Dance?

Dance is pure expression through movement:
Emotions translating through limbs, and stories told with the contours of our body.
Dance is motion with the power to make deep changes within our inner consciousness:
A SIMPLE movement can take A DANCER FROM POINT “A” TO “B.” YET MOVEMEMENT HAS THE POWER TO TRANSPORT a spectator TO DEVELOP AN ENTIRE NEW PERSPECTIVE ON LIFE.
Dance can be abstract, based on simple contact from one person to another:
Yet the versatility between styles of dance is amazing.
Dance can become extremely structured:
Each step Meticulously composed, like an orchestra PLAYING in a symphony.
Dance is entertainment, art, and a past time:
enjoyed throughout the ages and in all dance halls, clubs, studios, concerts, theaters, art galleries, festivals, stadiums, and everywhere in between.
Some people dance through life, others claim they don’t understand it, but even the simple two-step can be mastered by the most un-coordinated of souls. Even A walk across the stage can be dancing if it is performed in the theater ☺

For me, dance is freedom, and it makes me fly.
